8 Favorite Indoor Activities for Seniors

Rainy days make our 275 acre campus beautiful and green. But it also means more indoor activities during the winter months. Thankfully the list of activities to enjoy indoors – rain or shine – are endless! Here are some of the favorite indoor activities that residents (as well as staff) can enjoy on a rainy day.

  1. Exercise

At our wellness center residents enjoy cardio and weight lifting exercise. There is also a warm water pool and spa for those who prefer swimming. A quick exercise at home or at the wellness center is a favorite for residents on a rainy day.

  1. Bake or cook

There are some master chefs on the Mennonite Village campus. Or at least very talented residents who enjoy baking or cooking, especially if it is a family recipe! Share a favorite recipe with a friend and see what you can create.

  1. Woodworking

With the right tools, you can create wooden masterpieces. Many woodworkers on the Mennonite Village campus are blessed with creative craftsmanship from years of practice, and we love seeing what you can create.

  1. Arts or crafts

Each year our holiday market shows the creativity of our residents! Scrapbooking, painting, drawing, making jewelry and wood carving just to name a few. With some supplies on a rainy day, our residents can make artistic and creative masterpieces. We also have art shows throughout the year for those who are blessed with the gift of painting.

  1. Play games

Card games, board games, and puzzles are resident favorites. Getting together with a friend or playing a game by yourself is a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon.

  1. Podcast or audio recording

Some residents have audio recording equipment and enjoy recording a session. Alone or with a group, audio recording is always a good time.

If you aren’t interested in recording your own podcast, there are hundreds available to listen to along with audiobooks and more.

  1. Knitting, Crocheting, Quilting

For those gifted with yarn and fabric, create something cozy and creative. Blankets, scarves, hats, the possibilities are really endless for residents. These make perfect gifts for loved ones and friends, especially with the upcoming holiday season.

  1. Indoor gardening

Mennonite Village has a beautiful garden for the spring and summer months. During the rainy season, residents can still use their green thumb to grow an indoor garden. Herb gardening or seed starts are a favorite indoor gardening activity.
